The ISD 318 School Board convened for its regularly scheduled meeting at Bigfork School on Monday, April 18. District Superintendent Dr. Bruce Thomas offered his comments about children’s mental health.
Thomas said that at a previous workshop, the board had entertained a proposal for mental health staffing that would have included social workers and other specialized professionals. Funding for the proposal would have cost $920,000. Thomas described the mental health needs of the district as urgent but added; “This district does not have the resources to provide for that level of staffing.”
Thomas said that the district would be advocating a scaled back version of the proposal for the 2016/2017 school year. He added that the district had at least one person with expertise in the area of mental health. Thomas also said that his administration believed that it needed an individual with the appropriate skills to provide direction and suggestions to the district in the coming months.
Additional information about the staffing proposal will be presented at the next board meeting.
