The Nashwauk City Council will be taking more time to fill its recently vacated fire chief position.
Following the resignation of former chief John Calaguire at the Nashwauk City Council meeting last week, councilors declined to name a new chief but will instead implement a process whereby a larger pool of applicants can be considered.
Mayor Ben DeNucci expressed concern over appointing such positions without opening the application process. He told other councilors that appointments had been made without an open process for too long.
The council also appointed Rob Coughlin as interim chief.
In other business, the council:
• Accepted the resignation of John Calaguire as the city’s fire chief, effective immediately.
• Hired Shannon Fremling and Jerry Karnes to the Nashwauk Ambulance Service.
• Tabled a discussion on the establishment of a disc golf course. Some councilors expressed concern regarding how much such a course would be used.
• Established a $50 fee for the issuance of a temporary liquor license.
