Dan Strand was appointed Calumet city councilor last week to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Debbie Castle. He will fill the seat until the next regular election in November. The resolution was approved and Strand joined Councilors Tim Zaren, Sharon Nelson and Clerk Dalyce Mackey.
Street Department personnel Nick Matanich and Tom Serich reported numerous frozen water pipes. They encouraged city residents to run water in their homes to prevent additional problems. Both said the frozen water pipe issue will get worse before it improves.
In another water-related issue, a resident inquired about the smell of the water. Matanich reported a water test revealed there is no problem.
City Engineer Lorne Wikstrom gave an update on the water main project. The $350,000 estimate is within range of the actual cost. The IRRRB awarded the city a $150,000 grant for the project. Remaining funds will need to come from the city’s resources. Permission was given for Wikstrom to advertise for bids.
In other action, the council:
• Approved the synthetic drug ordinance.
• Tabled the Finke property purchase agreement until further information is obtained.
• Approved payment of the $13,092 League of Minnesota Cities insurance premium.
